All of our outdoor range of furniture is manufactured from entirely solid grade A teak.
All Sustainable-Furniture’s teak is manufactured from Indonesian teak forests. Teak (Tectona grandis) is not a timber from tropical rain forests, and indeed, teak cannot grow in rain forests – it is a deciduous tree which grows particularly well in the dry, hilly terrain typical of plantation forests in Southeast Asia. Teak is a highly durable wooden timber species very resistant to rot and decay with a natural water repellency due to the rubber and oil content. Hence the reason why in bygone years teak was (and still is!) the favourite timber for ship construction, ship decking and jetties or wharfs.
Teak was first introduced to Java in the 14th century, followed by the establishment of large state-owned plantations during the Dutch colonial era. Generations of Javanese people have worked in the state plantations and the people have learned how to plant and manage teak and have created themselves a wonderful natural source which now forms a huge part of their economy. Teak trees can take several hundreds of years to grow but also important for the Javanese economy is that people can keep their teak trees for as long as they wish – which implies more money for each tree – or they can sell them during times of financial need.
We have taken responsible steps to ensure that the teak we supply to you is sourced from FSC certified forests, this ensures that instead of rain forests being depleted or threatened, this fabulous species flourishes and remains protected for years to come. Specifically in Java Indonesia, Perum Perhutani is the government agency which is responsible for managing Indonesia’s extensive forests and plantations and Java’s plantations are now well managed by Perum Perhutani to ensure the continued growth of this magnificent timber but this also ensures continued support for many less fortunate families in the Indonesian economy.
Perum Perhutani operate a strict policy regulating the number and size of trees which can be felled, as well as with regard to the number of trees which are replanted to maintain the productivity of the teak forests for future generations. When plantation grown, the tree will attain a height of up to 45m with a diameter 1 – 1.5m. It will be ready for harvesting at around 50 – 60 years. If well maintained the tree can produce a clear stem of up to 30m in length giving a high timber yield.
By regular visits to the factories in Indonesia we have personally ensured (and will continue to do so) that the work force in our factories is both legal and employees are treated with respect – they love their work and are happy.
We closely monitor the local news through the Jakarta Post, and regularly post news articles onto our website. Our Company is committed to maintaining an interest in both the local economy of our wood sources as well as the news from the actual forests.
There are many grades of teak wood and we pride ourselves on sourcing teak of the highest quality and we have great confidence in the durability of our products. Natural wood characteristics such as small cracks appearing in the end grain due to change in temperature and humidity may occur, especially with the outdoor teak range. These may appear and disappear with the changing weather conditions. This will not affect the durability, serviceability or lifespan of your furniture and is completely normal.
In particular, with our outdoor garden furniture range, where the teak is subjected to the UV rays, it will gradually age to a charming silver grey colour. If you wish to avoid this aging process then our environmentally friendly teak sealer product should be applied as per the instructions. THIS IS A TIMBER FOR LIFE GREAT FOR INDOOR OR OUTDOOR FURNITURE!
